A Charleston Weekend

Steve's parents have settled in Charleston, in an amazing house within easy walking distance of the city's downtown area. I love Charleston, although I haven't been in years - it was so much fun to rediscover the city, especially with our family's new "locals"!

The girls quickly discovered SuSu's piano and immediately treated us to a concert.

On Saturday, we set out to Patriot's Point to explore the USS Yorktown, which is a retired aircraft carrier...a fitting activity given the Memorial Day weekend.

Maddie didn't let the fact that SuSu's sunglasses had broken deter her from claiming them as her own.

There are helicopter tours that take off right behind the aircraft carrier, and Anna enjoyed watching the helicopters fly away.

There is a funny story about those shoes Maddie is wearing. Halfway into the drive down to Charleston from Atlanta, Maddie starts hollering about her shoes. I turn around and see bare feet poking out from her car seat. Steve had made the (incorrect) assumption that I had packed the girls' shoes, and I had made the (incorrect) assumption that Steve had put shoes on both girls before he loaded them into the car. Luckily Anna had put on a pair of shoes by herself, and luckily I had bought Maddie a pair of water shoes the day before the trip. So...those are her new water shoes, which have been thoroughly broken in now. And even funnier - Anna managed to lose her shoes within an hour of being at SuSu's house (we seriously couldn't find them anywhere, even when we were packing up to go home), so she ended up wearing her water shoes all weekend too. I can't imagine either pair were very comfortable for all the walking we did, but hey...they got the job done.

There is a local gelato shop in downtown Charleston that became an evening tradition. Maddie's shirt is testament to the fact that the chocolate gelato is highly recommended.

We did a ton of walking and I was so bummed that I accidentally left my FitBit at home. This is such an active city and I love all of the energy and the pedestrian-friendly streets.

On Sunday we stuck our tongues out at the overcast sky and took the girls to the beach. Anna had been begging to go and so we drove ourselves over to the Isle of Palms.

The girls had a blast at the beach and visiting their Poppy, SuSu, and Aunt Kristy (and we did, too!). It was the perfect warm-up for our big beach trip next month - we can't wait!

Spring Has Sprung

The weather has been warming up (quickly) around here and we celebrated the last few days of Spring with lots of play time and even a little road trip back to Madison to visit with Steve's parents and to visit their beautiful Madison home one last time.

I squeezed the girls into last year's bathing suits so we could fill up our pool for the first time.

I don't remember if I have mentioned it before, but Anna calls this her "party dress", and she picks it out to wear whenever she feels it is a special occasion or if she is feeling particularly celebratory that day.

In hindsight, we should have taken these pictures pre-ice cream and pre-nap time loopiness. I still think they turned out pretty cute, though!

The girls loved this porch swing. We are thinking about finding a place for one in our yard too, now.
